The Science of PRP Therapy

The human body is composed of 93 percent red blood cells, 6 percent white blood cells, and 1 percent platelets. Platelets are great for stopping blood loss through blood clotting, but they’re also used by the body to aid in healing injuries as well as regenerating new tissue.

Because the body’s initial reaction to an injury is to send platelets to the injured area, PRP can successfully stimulate repair by the release of growth factors as well as attracting stem cell to the site.

PRP injection therapy involves separating the platelets from the red blood cells through the use of a machine called a centrifuge. The entire process of drawing the blood from the patient and spinning it down into a concentrated Platelet Rich Plasma solution takes about thirty minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. It is a regenerative therapy used to treat injuries and soft tissue. Platelets contain substances called growth factors. These substances accelerate healing and in high concentrations, are highly effective. PRP makes use of the patient’s own blood to regenerate damaged tissue and ligaments.
Blood is taken from the patient’s arm and placed into a centrifuge. Then, platelets are separated from other blood components and platelet concentration is increased. PRP concentrations of platelets are anywhere from five to 10 times greater than normal blood. This platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the injured area. The entire procedure typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
PRP has shown greatest promise in the treatment of chronic injuries such tendonitis. Neck, shoulder, back and hip pain also benefit greatly from PRP treatment. It is highly effective in the treatment of acute injuries such as pulled or torn muscles and ligaments and is being investigated as a post-surgical treatment as well.
PRP treatment involves a comprehensive evaluation of your condition by a medical professional. A complete medical history and examination of the injured area are required to determine if PRP will be effective for your condition. Your doctor will discuss your complaints and suggest a course of treatment once a diagnosis has been reached.
Generally, PRP is not painful. Injection into the joint area involves minimal discomfort. Some patients have reported pain due to needle usage, but this is highly dependent on individual pain tolerance. A prescription strength topical numbing cream is used which greatly reduces any pain at the site of injection.
Yes, PRP is considered safe. Because the treatment uses the patient’s own blood, negative reaction to the treatment is extremely rare. Patients may also experience a small increase in pain or swelling following the injection. This will decrease within a short period of time and is completely normal.
Treatment length depends on a number of factors. Based on the length and severity of your condition, several injections may be needed to eliminate or reduce pain to an acceptable level. PRP treats the underlying cause of pain instead of masking the symptoms. When pain level decreases and functionality increases, treatment is considered effective. Success rates of PRP have been reported between 70 and 90 percent for a variety of injuries. Effects of treatment may last from months to years, but again, this is highly dependent on your condition and overall health.
It is recommended that patients rest and drink plenty of fluids following treatment. In addition, use of all anti-inflammatory medications including ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin must be avoided for 14 days following the procedure. Limit physical activity as recommended by your physician and be sure to attend all follow-up appointments as instructed. Many times, a comprehensive treatment plan will be included as part of the procedure and may include rehab or physical therapy.
Cost of the procedure depends on a number of factors and must be determined by your practitioner. Since PRP is considered an investigational treatment, it is not covered by health insurance. Your initial consultation, however, may be covered by your health insurance plan.
PRP is typically used to treat conditions that have the potential to heal themselves. PRP injections recruit stem cells to assist with the healing process. Platelets are also necessary for healing as they contain growth factors responsible for tissue repair. Since the two are so closely related, often, they will be used in conjunction for the treatment of more severe conditions.
